Many authors has devoted works to Caesium-137, along with other radioactive isotopes caesium-134, iodine-131, xenon-133, and strontium-90, were released into the environment during nearly all nuclear weapon tests and some nuclear accidents, most notably the Chernobyl disaster and the Fukushima Daiichi disaster. Method : A descriptive study is presented herein, on the cohort of patients directly exposed and contaminated (Groups I and II) during the cesium-137 accident, which occurred in Goiania (Midwest Brazil) in 1987. The incident cases of malignant neoplasms diagnosed between 1988 and 2017 are described. A much smaller nuclear accident involving cesium-137 occurred in Goiânia, Brazil, in 1987. A thorough account of the entire affair was published by the International Atomic Energy Agency in 1988. [8] The accident was initiated when two men who were looking for old equipment to sell for scrap broke in to an abandoned medical clinic.

Cesium-137: radiological accident that marked Brazil Cesium 137 is a radioactive isotope of cesium which is prevalent due to its spontaneous production, which occurs as a result of nuclear fission of other radioactive materials. E

A group of scavengers raided an abandoned cancer center and found a small lead canister, later selling it to a junkyard. The Goiânia incident left four people dead—Devair Ferreira’s wife, two of his employees and his six-year-old niece Leide das Neves Ferreira, who sat on the floor eating pieces of cesium-137 along with her sandwich. Everyone suffered multiple organ damage, internal bleeding, hair loss and external scarring. Cesium 137 is commonly used in the form of powder or pellets to give a radiation dose to cancer patients and also has wide application in industry, for example in gauging the density of welds. A 1972 Brazilian case study on the carcinogenicity of caesium-137 examined the health effects in humans exposed to caesium-137. In 1987, civilians in Goiania, Brazil, were accidentally exposed to caesium-137.
